John Smith’s Cup Odds Preview and Tips

The John Smiths Cup Odds have the lightly raced Pekan Star as a warm favourite for this traditional handicap.

20 runners go to post for this 10 furlong contest on the Knavesmire at York.

7/2 Pekan Star, 7/1 Green Destiny, Beachfire, 8/1 Modun, 10/1 Lost in the Moment, 14/1 Bar

There are several typically tricky contenders for thsi 20 runner handicap, with some lightly raced types trying to stay one step ahead of the handicapper to bag this prize which is worth £100,000. Pekan Star, the favourite, is one of thoe types. His credentials look good, hes lightly raced, with a course and distance win in him, and apparent room for improvement. Hes down at the lower end of the handicap and has a very big looking chance, with his trainer placing him shrewdly. Green Destiny had been on a nice winning run up ntil being well beaten last time out in the Wolferton Handicap at Ascot, but he was seriously unlucky in running, and has a chance if that excuse is valid.

Beachfire ran through to win that event, and did so impressively, but hes been punished by the handicapper for that win. Modun was favourite for the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot but flopped badly, and is perhaps best watched, while Lost in the Moment is held by Beachfire on their Ascot form.

Of the many outsiders, Andew Baldings Constant Contact appears a threat to the leading contenders.
