Golf: Northern Trust Open Betting Tips

Golf guru Bruce Robertson casts his expert eye over the this week’s PGA Tour event, the Northern Trust Open in California and gives us his top 4 players that he expects to be there or thereabouts on the final day.

Event: Northern Trust Open

Venue: Riviera CC, California

Par: 71

Yards: 7,280

Riviera hosts one of the oldest events on the PGA Tour this week. It is a course where experience is required and the emphasis is on accuracy and course management. However, there is rain forecast and this should be to the benefit of the longer hitters.

1. J B Holmes 28/1

JB has gone close for us this year already and I think this may be the week where he goes even closer. He has finished in the top 10 in the last 3 years so is clearly at home here. He fades the ball which this course is said to be ideally suited for. His big hitting will be an advantage in the wet conditions. A two time winner on The PGA Tour – let’s hope this is number three.

2. Luke Donald 22/1

This is the first start for Luke on The PGA Tour this year and you can understand why. Runner up last year and his last 12 rounds at Riviera have been par or better. He had a great Ryder Cup and that good form continued in The Far East. He does not win often enough for me but is a class player, suited to certain courses, of which this is one.

3. Hunter Mahan 25/1

Was bang in contention last week at Pebble Beach but three putted the par 5 eighteenth, while winner DA Points holed out for an eagle on the 14th. He has two top tens this year and has the accuracy to shoot low at Riviera. He is playing in his home state of California, which is always a slight advantage, and has a great each way chance this week.

4. Rory Sabbatini 80/1

A past course winner, Sabbatini is my outsider this week. His form figures are improving and he has the power, like JB, if conditions are soggy. While not always the most popular or level headed of players, he has the quality and game to compete with the very best. He has a good early tee-time on Thursday which can often be an advantage if the winds pick up later in the day.
