England vs Switzerland – Match Preview and Betting Tip

If the English players learned anything from their last home games, it is that you can’t play like the match will last 90 hours instead of 90 minutes and that a one goal lead is not enough. Ghana put up quite a fight and in the absence of a real opposition, they managed to score the equalizer in the last minute. Montenegro got away with a draw at Wembley as well, and they didn’t even need to score. Add to this the 1-2 home defeat to France, and you’ve got the big picture about what the hosts are trying to deal with before this fixture.

There is only one way to erase these memories and this is by winning in a convincing fashion the match against Switzerland, a team who didn’t defeat them in over 30 years. In theory, the visitors should play with a sense of urgency, as their 4 points are not enough to close the gap and the chances are high that they will miss the Euro 2012. It will be even more difficult to cause an upset on Wembley now, when they travel without their best players, Alexander Frei and Marco Streller, both retired from football.

A draw wouldn’t help the visitors at all, as they are trailing behind Montenegro, who has a decent chance of earning more points tonight, but defeating England at home is not something Hitzfeld is prepared to do. He will field a side made mostly out of young and promising players that will probably shine in the next qualifying campaign, but for the time being all they can hope for is a decent game. It’s intimidating to play on Wembley even for the big teams of Europe, so these young players will feel the pressure even more in the first minutes.

The hosts will miss Rooney, who is suspended for this match and Defoe who is the top scorer for England in the current campaign. This might look like a serious blow, but it is more of a blessing in disguise, because it will give other players the chance to shine. Fabio Capello will use Walcott and Bent with the two of them striving to prove their worth and to earn a place in the future starting formations as well.

We should see an one sided match for the first half and until England scores the first goal, the Swiss will probably put safety first. Changing the tactic won’t help them a bit though and the more chances they take upfront, the higher is the probability for England to score at least once more and secure victory.
