Easter Monday Football Tips
There’s a full programme of fixtures on Bank Holiday Monday in the football league. With just three games remaining for the majority of sides, it’s all to play for in all three divisions.
Pick of the fixtures in the Championship sees promotion-chasing Reading host relegation-threatened Sheffield United.
Reading are in tremendous form of late. A 0-0 draw at Leeds on Friday night halted an eight game winning streak in the league as they are finishing the campaign strongly. Brian McDermott has done a great job in turning them from bottom of the table strugglers to promotion contenders in his 14 months at the helm.
The Royals know that victory against Sheffield United will guarantee them at least a play-off place, but the automatic position is not yet out of the question either. The opposite can be said of the Blades. Defeat in this one will send them down to League One, a drop which would see them in their lowest league position for 22 years.
United came from behind to beat Bristol City on Saturday afternoon. That result should give them a bit of confidence ahead of the trip to the Madejski Stadium. With both sides needing the points but for different reasons, it could be a cracker.
There could be plenty of goals, so I’d back over 2.5 goals at 5/6 . I fancy Reading’s good form to prove too much for Mickey Adams’ side at 4/9 and if you’re looking for a good price on a first goalscorer, why not go with penalty and free- kick taker Ian Harte of Reading who is available at 14/1 to open the scoring.
Dropping into League One, and the stand-out game in my eyes is Huddersfield versus Dagenham & Redbridge.
Another top v bottom clash, the home side will be hoping to keep the pressure on second placed Southampton with maximum points in this one. The Terriers lie third on goal difference, so they must keep winning and hope that the Saints slip up in order to take that automatic promotion place.
Lee Clark’s side are on an incredible 22 match unbeaten run in the league. It’s all credit to Southampton that it hasn’t been enough to break into the top two. The former Newcastle man will be hoping to extend that streak until the end of the season in order to win promotion back to the Championship.
At the other end of the standings, the Daggers lie precariously just one point above the drop zone. They go into the game on the back of three straight defeats and will need to halt that bad form if they wish to remain a League One club for 2011/12.
Again, with both sides desperate for the points, it should be a hell for leather encounter, but you have to think that Huddersfield’s superiority will tell in the end and they should claim the three points at 1/2 . If you fancy a big win for the home team, Huddersfield to win by 3 goals is available at 13/2 .
The pick of the bank holiday fixtures in the football league comes in League Two, where already promoted Chesterfield host second place Bury in a game which could well decide the title.
A win for the Spireites and they will lift the trophy, while an away win would put the Shakers just two points behind their rivals with two games to play.
Bury are the form side in the division. Following manager Alan Knill’s departure to Scunthorpe, caretaker boss Richie Barker has led them to five straight victories and ever closer to promotion back up to League One.
Chesterfield have been a little up and down of late, stumbling their way somewhat over the finishing line. They can relax knowing that whatever happens between no and the season’s climax, they will be in League One next season and perhaps you will start to see the best of them again.
It should be an exciting and entertaining game, with both sides playing good football this season. I fancy it could finish even, and the draw is available at 12/5 . For a value goalscorer bet, try Mark Allott of Chesterfield. He’s due a goal and can be backed at a huge 28/1 .
