NBA Playoffs – Memphis Grizzlies stun Spurs and win series 4-2
I’m not sure if this is the end of the Tim Duncan era with the San Antonio Spurs. It doesn’t really seem as if he is going to be saying goodbye to his career anytime soon. One thing is for certain, thought. Regardless of whether Duncan keeps on playing or not, this was their last really good shot at winning yet another –his 5th with San Antonio- NBA championship ring.
They were doing fairly well. Let’s not forget that the Spurs had the best record in the league for pretty much all of the regular season. But we can’t help but to notice that thing began to get ugly towards the end of March, where they not only lost the best record to the Chicago Bulls but also began to give signs of weakening. What got on the Spurs way? Well, the Memphis Grizzlies and one Zach Randolph who was simply unstoppable. On the 99-91 win on game six at Memphis, Randolph guided the Grizzlies with 31 points and 11 rebounds to lead this underdog team make it into the Western Conference semifinals for their very first time.
The Grizzlies is not a team with the finest pedigree ever. It has taken them a long while to actually become somewhat of a competitive team. As a matter of fact, the Grizzlies do fairly well in the regular season but are not short of embarrassing when it comes to the Playoffs. The Grizzlies had somehow been swept in all of their previous three NBA Playoffs appearances. That means, their playoffs record looked something like this: 0-12. Not too great.
But it was all about to change this season. Randolph was not the only player bringing on his A-game for Memphis. Marc Gasol had 12 points and 13 rebounds, Tony Allen added 11 points, and rookie Greivis Vasquez had 11 off the bench playing 24 minutes. Memphis will now face the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday for the NBA Western Conference Finals.
