NBA – New York Knicks defeat the Miami Heat at South Beach
Last week we said that the arrival of Carmelo Anthony to the locker-room of the Madison Square Garden might had been the best thing to happen to the Knicks since they chose Patrick Ewing as the No. 1 pick of the 1985 NBA Draft. All though Melo has only been in New York for a week and yes, it is quite too soon to make any powerful statements, it really seems as if we were right on target with that one.
The game was played down to the last second. LeBron James had the ball. He managed to pass by Carmelo Anthony, who was just transferred in a 15-player deal from the Denver Nuggets to the New York Knicks, but Amare Stoudemire was waiting for him, and LeBron couldn’t pass. For a big change, the Knicks were capable of holding off the Miami Heat on defense. Yes, that’s right, even Anthony who during the last 6 years as a pro had been somewhat allergic to taking on a defensive role, was involved to the fullest going one-on-one with James.
Chauncey Billups made the “we-can-win-this” 3-pointer with 1:01 left for quite an emotional boost for the Knicks. Stoudemire blocked James’ layup try with 7 seconds remaining to protect a one-point lead, and the Knicks finished with a 13-2 run to beat the Heat 91-86 on Sunday night. And it was beautiful.
Let’s take a look at the Knicks numbers for a second here: Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points and 9 boards while Amare Stoudemire added 16 points and 10 rebounds. Chauncey Billups –who also came from Denver in the mega transfer this year- had 16 points for the Knicks. New York had to rally from a 15-point deficit in the first-half to show that the 115-109 lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers wasn’t really a reflection of what this team could really do down the stretch.
The Miami Heat won the two games played in December of last year, but the Knicks came back in January 27 and took an important 93-88 win at home and have now followed it with 91-86 win on the road to tie this season’s series with the Heat.
New York scored the final 16 points of the half after Billups made a 3-pointer, the first of four by the Knicks before the half-time break. That included another shot by Billups and a falling-down, 3-pointer by Walker at the buzzer to give New York a 52-51 lead at half time. Then it was on for the Knicks.
The Miami Heat was up by 66-60 when Miller made a 3-pointer with 3:30 left on the third quarter. But it seemed as if the Heat was done after that. Anthony jumped over James Jones for a layup with 1:13 left; added a 3-pointer 34 seconds later, and the Knicks were within a one point margin going into the fourth quarter at 66-65.
And then it was time to defend. The Knicks did a phenomenal job keeping the Miami Heat under the radar. James scored 27 points for Miami and recorded 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Chris Bosh added 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Dwyane Wade finished with only 12 points for the Heat. But that was not enough. The Knicks D forced 20 turnovers as long-time fan Spike Lee kept on cheering each point that lead to this great win for the Knicks.
