Czech women win three titles at Wimbledon
Three WTA players from the Czech Republic won Wimbledon title over the weekend: Petra Kvitova won in womens singles, Kveta Peschke won women’s doubles title partnered with Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik and Iveta Benesova won mixed doubles with Austria’s Jurgen Melzer.
The 21-year-old Kvitova delighted womens tennis with her confident and solid performance against Maria Sharapova in the womens singles final. No screams, big stage or the credentials of her opponent could shake Kvitovas game, she was determined and stable in her 6-3 6-4 win over the three-time Grand Slam champion. As for the rankings, Kvitova has risen from No.8 to No.7.
The Czech Republic was also triumphant in womens doubles, as their Kveta Peschke together with Katarina Srebotnik pulled off a 6-3 6-1 win over Sabine Lisicki and Samantha Stosur. Pesche is experiencing Grand Slam glory for the first time, and together with Srebotnik has risen from No.6 to No.1 in doubles rankings.
Just like her two compatriots, Iveta Benesova won a Grand Slam title for the first time, in her first partnership with Jurgen Melzer, who is also a left-hander. They defeated Mahesh Bhupathi and Elena Vesnina in the final 6-3 6-2.
