Justin Timberlake Open Odds Nick Watney heads betting in Las Vegas
The PGA Tour resumes this week with the first of four tournaments that make up the Fall Series. The first of these is the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, played at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. Formally known as the Las Vegas Invitational, the likes of Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods have won this tournament in the past, but this weeks event takes a very different look to it in terms of quality, as some of the lesser lights on the PGA Tour look to secure their playing rights for next season. One player who doesnt have to worry about this is the favourite Nick Watney, who is a 9/1 chance with bookmaker Stan James to win in Vegas.
Las Vegas resident Nick Watney arrives at Summerlin as the bookmakers favourite, but off the back of a disappointing run in the FedEx Cup playoffs where he finished ninth. Hes played well in this tournament in the past with two tied sixth place finishes in six attempts and hes a two time winner on tour this season, winning the AT&T National and the WGC-Cadillac Championship back in the Spring. Watney has finished in the top ten on nine occassions out of 21 starts and its no surprise that he is the bookmakers favourite this week.
Scotsman Martin Laird has enjoyed another good season on the PGA Tour and is a former winner of this event two years ago. The Scot was foiled in a play-off in this event twelve months ago and clearly enjoys the course. Laird won the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier in the year and another five top tens to his name. Hes been quiet of late but hes well fancied on his return to Las Vegas and can be backed at 14/1 second favourite with Stan James.
Also at 14/1, Ryan Moore also likes the course, making the cut on all five appearances in the event and tied for seventh on his last appearance here in 2007. A product of the University of Nevada in Las Vegas, Moore should feel at home in the desert and will be hoping that a good finish could take his seasons earnings over the $2m mark. The American has not won for two years however and with just four top tens in 2011 it might be a leap of faith to back him here.
Kyle Stanley is next in the betting and comes to Vegas off the back of three appearances in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Stanley managed to record three top 25 finishes in the first three play-off events but that still wasnt enough for him to make the Tour Championship last week. Signs are that hes striking it well and he will have grown from his narrow defeat to Steve Stricker in the John Deere Classic. The youngster is enjoying a good season and a win here would really cap things off.
There are a couple of other former winners in what looks like being a really competitive field, with George McNeill a 30/1 chance ahead of last years winner Jonathan Byrdat 40/1 with Stan James, the winner of a play-off when he holed out ata par three in the play-off for an incredible win.
