Iowa Considers Legalizing Online Poker

The US state of Iowa senate approved a bill this week that proposes to study the potential advantages of legalizing online poker within the state. This news is a welcome boost to a US poker market that is suffering dark days after the Black Friday revelations that saw three of the biggest US online poker sites temporarily shut down pending a US federal investigation into possible fraud and money laundering.Set to be organized and carried out by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission, the bill will attempt to justify a need for legalizing online poker in the state. If the findings work in favour of legalizing online poker then residents of the state of Iowa will be able to access an intrastate poker room which will be regulated and taxed by the state as well as bring much needed financial benefits and revenue to the state’s economy. In what is sure to be a very popular decision with US poker players in Iowa, this study could have much more far reaching consequences. Recently, New Jersey governor Chris Christie rejected the possibility of legalizing online gambling in the state and if online poker was legalized in Iowa it would set a massive precedent that could see a knock-on effect with other states following suit. There is still a long way to go yet and the approval of the study is only the beginning stages of a long road for Iowa and the online poker community. However, the important thing is that this is a huge statement of intent from Iowa.
